Nexus 5 screen is black?

Hey guys new here.. as I have a problem with my Nexus 5 it is brand new and came today.. it turns on and lights flash and I can ring it, but the screen literally stays black. I don't really want to mess around with the inside of it but why should that be a problem? the phone is brand new :/ any help is appreciated, honestly. I really want to use it :(
