Android P Beta 3 has arrived, with a number of changes and features over the previous release. The Sony Xperia XZ2 is one of the non-Google devices that have been receiving these betas, including the latest Android P Beta 3. The Sony Xperia XZ2 was previously updated to Android P Beta 2 which saw Sony release a number of bug fixes and other changes on top of Android P itself. Now, with Android P Beta 3, we're seeing the exact same thing, but with one unexpected extra – Widevine L1 support. You can check out Sony's own changelog below.
- Storage MTP – Cannot transfer files or create new folders on external SDcard
- Airplane mode – Need to enter SIM pin after enable and disable airplane mode
- Widevine – Now supports L1 security level
- Camera – Flash now works for more than one picture
- Overall BT improvements
Widevine L1 is what prevented many flagship phones from playing Netflix or Amazon Prime Video above 480p. The Sony Xperia XZ2 has Widevine L3 on the earlier versions of Android P, meaning that this same restriction was present. Unlike with the OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 5T though, you do not need to send in your device to have anything enabled. You can check out some screenshots below of Android P Beta 3 on the Sony Xperia XZ2, along with the DRM information which shows Widevine L1 is present.
There are a number of things to note in this version of Android though. The camera quality, for starters, is poor, as it's the stock AOSP camera. SD cards also need to be formatted before they can work, or else your device will go into a bootloop. As a result, we recommend removing your SD card if you want to use Android P on this phone at present. Inserting a SIM as well requires a full device restart to have the system recognize it.
If none of that phases you, you can check out the download link below to install it. We do not recommend using this on your Android phone as a daily driver currently. It's aimed primarily at developers who want to test their applications on the newest version of Android. Android P for the Sony Xperia XZ2 is shaping up nicely, and with Widevine L1 support on the way as well, there's more to look forward to for device owners than a simple software update. If you install it, let us know what you think of it in the comments!
