The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro (device code-name: whyred) was launched in India in February alongside the Indian Redmi Note 5. The phone's list of specifications includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 system-on-chip, 4GB/6GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, 6-inch Full HD+ (2160×1080) IPS display, 12MP + 5MP (depth sensing) rear cameras, 20MP front-facing camera, and a 4000mAh battery. It shipped with MIUI 9 on top of Android 7.1 Nougat, and a leaked ROM of Android Oreo-based MIUI 9 is available.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro costs Rs. 13,999 ($215) for the 4GB RAM/64GB variant and Rs. 16,999 ($260) for the 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant. It has been generally acclaimed to have a great price-to-performance ratio. This is the reason why it has been going out of stock within seconds in weekly flash sales on Flipkart and Mi.com. In simple terms, the phone has been hard to actually buy. This means that many times, consumers are forced to buy alternative devices just because of the lack of availability.
Last month, Xiaomi removed the Cash on Delivery payment option for Redmi Note 5 Pro weekly sales to prevent reselling, but the phone's availability is still an issue. Now, the company has announced consumers can pre-order the phone exclusively on Mi.com on Friday, April 13 at 12 PM IST.
Pre-order availability means that buyers can get the phone booked in advance, instead of buying in a flash sale. Xiaomi promises guaranteed priority shipping for pre-orders. Pre-orders are limited to one or two smartphones per order, and payments have to be made up-front as there is no cash on delivery option. Pre-orders can also be cancelled by buyers before the phone is shipped.
Customers opting to pre-order the Redmi Note 5 Pro will be eligible for offers. Under the Jio Football Offer, they will get cashback of Rs. 2200 in the form of 44 vouchers of Rs. 50 in the MyJio app. They will also get up to 4.5TB additional data with the Rs. 198 and Rs. 299 recharges before March 31, 2019.
In our view, the company's decision to make the phone available for pre-order is a step forward, but it's still not ideal. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 is now permanently on open sale on Amazon.in, which means that buyers no longer have to go through any difficulty to buy it. As of now, it seems that demand still remains higher than supply for the Redmi Note 5 Pro to get such treatment in the form of permanent open sales. We hope that Xiaomi solves the availability issues for potential customers of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, and makes it permanently open for sale in the near future.
