Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo launches in India with Dual Cameras and Android Oreo

In recent months, Samsung has been facing stiff competition from Xiaomi in the Indian smartphone market. In Q4 2017, Xiaomi overtook Samsung to become the largest smartphone vendor in India. The company's Redmi series has sold very well in India, with the Indian Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Pro, and Redmi 5 all proving popular. In January, Samsung released the Galaxy On7 Prime in the lower mid-range price segment, but the phone did not have competitive specifications and it failed to distinguish itself. Now, the company is back with another phone release: the Galaxy J7 Duo.

It should be noted that despite competition from Xiaomi, Samsung India continues to perform well. The Galaxy J7 series in particular has been a best-seller, and Samsung states that it's India's most popular smartphone series. It accounts for every third smartphone smartphone sold in the country, according to Samsung. The Galaxy J7 Duo's headlining feature is dual cameras, as it's the first time that dual cameras have made an appearance in a Galaxy J series device.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo has a 13MP + 5MP dual rear camera setup. The phone has an 8MP front-facing camera. Both the rear and front cameras have an f/1.9 aperture and LED flash, which should result in better low-light photos. The rear cameras have Live Focus, which is Samsung's implementation of portrait mode. Live Focus allows users to adjust the background blur while taking a photo or even after having taken a photo, just like Samsung's flagship devices. Users can add "soft light effect in different shapes" to photos with Background Blur Shape.

The front-facing camera has a Selfie Focus mode that blurs the background. The phone also comes with a Face Unlock feature that "allows [users] to unlock [their] phone effortlessly." The cameras can record Full HD video at 30FPS.

The phone is powered by an Exynos 7 series octa-core processor. The exact chip model hasn't been detailed yet. The SoC is paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, that supports expandable storage up to 256GB thanks to the presence of a microSD card slot.

The Galaxy J7 Duo has a 5.5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) Super AMOLED display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The phone is powered by a 3000mAh battery. It has an App Pair feature that lets users work with two apps simultaneously, and ships with Android Oreo. It also has a fingerprint sensor which is placed on the back of the device.

It comes with the usual connectivity options including Wi-Fi 802.11ac 2.4GHz/5GHz, VHT80, Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB 2.0 port, and 3.5mm headphone jack. The sensors include an accelerometer, RGB light sensor, and a proximity sensor. (The company's budget phones are notorious for not having basic sensors, and a gyroscope is missing in the the J7 Duo's list of sensors.) Its dimensions are 153.5 mm x 77.2 mm x 8.1 mm.

The device will be available across retail stores starting April 12th for Rs. 16,990 ($260) in Black and Gold Colors. In our view, it looks to be a tough sell at that price against competitors that have better specifications such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Honor 9 Lite, and the Honor 7X.
