Android Distribution Numbers for August 2017 has Nougat at 13.5%, Marshmallow at 32.3%

Earlier this week Google released Android's security patches for the month of August and that means new Android distribution numbers would be coming out soon as well. As usual, this snapshot of data for Android represents all the devices that visited the Google Play Store during a certain time period. This month's data was collected during a 7-day period which ended on August 8, 2017, and removed all versions with less than 0.1% as usual.

When we compare this data to that of last month, we can see that Android 7.0 and 7.1 Nougat went from 11.5% to 13.5%. July was the first month that Nougat hit double digits and we're still seeing this number slowly increase as more new smartphones are shipping with the latest version of Android. Android 6.0 Marshmallow has gone up to 32.3%, which is still only a small increase to what it was in July when its numbers were sitting at 31.8%.

These are the only two versions of Android which saw an increase as all others either dropped or stayed the same when compared to last month. Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop reached 29.2% (compared to 30.1% in July), Android 4.4 KitKat is now at 16% (down from 17.1% the month before), and Android 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 Jelly Bean only has 7.6% of the total pie when it was at 8.1% a month before. Android 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich is still holding strong with the same numbers it had last month at 0.7%.

Android 2.3.x Gingerbread is also another version that remained the same when compared to July, 2017 as it too still has 0.7% of the total pie. It's been speculated that Android 8.0's official release will be happening before next month's numbers come out. But remember, it needs more than 0.1% to make an appearance in the Android distribution numbers chart for September so we'll just have to wait and see if enough devices are updated in time. Although, it will be interesting to see if Google sold enough Pixel phones to help increase early adoption of the new update.
