After initial reports of ZTE working on its first ever smartwatch, and then subsequently, having its images leaked, the ZTE Quartz is now finally official as a T-Mobile exclusive in the USA.
Not to be confused with the Android 4.3-equipped ZTE Quartz smartphone, the ZTE Quartz connected smartwatch is ZTE's first smartwatch. The ZTE Quartz smartwatch aims for the introductory category of smart watches with interchangeable wristbands, allowing its user to experience Android Wear 2.0 at a modest price.
The ZTE Quartz comes with a circular AMOLED display with a diameter of 1.4″, a resolution of 400 x 400, and Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The watch is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 SoC and comes with 768MBs of RAM and 4GBs of internal storage.
The watch also comes with a 500mAh battery, IP67 certification, and a built-in speaker, which will come in handy when you use the watch to place calls using T-Mobile's network. The press release fails to mention the existence of LTE, so we assume connectivity is restricted to 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.1. The ZTE Quartz also lacks a heart rate sensor and NFC.
The ZTE Quartz smartwatch does come with Android Wear 2.0 which is its biggest draw. This means you get all the new features that Google's operating system for wearables comes with like Google Assistant, the Watch App Store, Standalone apps, and personalized watch faces. We assume there's no Android Pay support given the lack of mention of NFC in the press release, though.
The ZTE Quartz will be available on TMobile.com from April 14th for a price of $192. The smartwatch will also be available in select T-Mobile stores as well, from April 21st onwards.
