OnePlus Leaves OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X Owners in the Dark for Their Nougat Update

OnePlus has been maintaining a good record with its flagships, the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T. The devices have received their Android 7.1.1 update coupled with OxygenOS 4.1 on the stable branch, and continue to receive several updates in the Open Beta branch.

But outside of the current generation flagship, the situation does not appear as good. OnePlus's smartphone portfolio is fairly limited for a company that is more than three years old, but even then, little attention has been paid to yesteryear's devices.

Take for example the OnePlus 2, OnePlus's flagship for 2015 with the ill-fated Snapdragon 810. The device was launched with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which was later updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in mid-2016. The last update to the device came in a few weeks ago, in the form of OxygenOS 3.5.8. To the disappointment of its users, this update was still based on Android Marshmallow, although it did contain security patches up to March 2017.

Similarly, the OnePlus X with its Snapdragon 801 SoC was released in 2015 with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and was later updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The last update, OxygenOS 3.1.4, came to the device in November 2016, and it's still Marshmallow.

What users want, and what OnePlus is silent on to the best of our knowledge, is a word on what is up with the Nougat update for the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X. Though to be fair, at least for the OnePlus X, the Nougat update is likely out of their control.

OnePlus missed an opportunity to let users know about its progress on bringing Nougat when posting the changelog for their last update for the OnePlus 2. Forum users, both in the OnePlus forums and our own forums, are rather annoyed by the lack of communication more so than the lack of updates from the company.

This silence from the company has even prompted furious users to organize a Thunderclap campaign. What people want to know is the state of progress for Android Nougat on the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X. You can support the users on their Thunderclap campaign and know more about it here.

It is worth noting that nightly builds of LineageOS based on Android 7.1 Nougat are available for both, the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X.

We hope that OnePlus breaks its silence on the update status for these devices.
